From 2005 to 2015 this blog presented news items and resources relating to trial advocacy and the legal system, with a focus on Washington State. It was developed to support the Trial Advocacy Program at the University of Washington School of Law, but broadened to include appellate practice, the courts, access to justice, and related topics. It is no longer active.

Hellhole: Article on Solitary Confirnement
Annals of Human Rights: Hellhole: Reporting & Essays: The New Yorker, March 30, 2009. Atul Gawanda makes a strong case that prolonged solitary confinement is torture. He also discusses an alternative that has worked in Britain and Europe: housing prisoners in small groups where they have more control and more dignity.
People are social beings. We need someone to keep us sane. We need someone to complement our existence. We need someone period.
